Navien NCB-180Navien makes a combi-boiler based off of their rock solid tankless water heater. The Navien NCB-180 system is powerful, dependable, and strong enough to support all your homes heating and hot water needs.
How It Works
The Navien NCB-180 uses a very similar design to that of NPE tankless water heater except that instead of heating the homes water in the primary and secondary heat exchangers it heats glycol contained within the heating loop.
Internally within the NCB-180 is a small, but highly efficient heat exchanger that is able to transfer heat from the glycol to your homes water. This is done with complete isolation so that glycol contamination of your potable water is nearly impossible. Yes, this is a little less efficient than directly heating your homes water though the primary and secondary heat exchangers but the difference is negligible. See chart below for comparison of hot water production between a Navien tankless and the Navien combi-boiler.
|Navien Model||77 °F Water Temp Rise|
|NCB-180 (Combi)||3.4 GPM (12.9 L/m)|
|NPE-180 (Tankless)||3.8 GPM (14.3 L/m)|
|NCB-210 (Combi)||4.0 GPM (15.1 L/m)|
|NPE-210 (Tankless)||4.6 GPM (17.4 L/m)|
|NCB-240 (Combi)||4.5 GPM (17.0 L/m)|
|NPE-240 (Tankless)||5.0 GPM (12.9 L/m)|
Combi-Boiler Priorities and Settings
What happens when the boiler is heating your home and someone starts the shower? The combi system will sense this double demand and shift the priority from home heating to hot water production. You can run two showers and your dishwasher at the same time and still have extra hot water. Once demand drops for hot water the system will automatically focus on heating your home again.
Types of Heating
One of the greatest benefits of a Navien combi boiler is the fact they are so expandable and adaptable. If you are running a conventional forced air gas, oil, or propane furnace a combi-boiler with addition of a simple heat exchanger and blower can use your homes existing duct work. Want to add some radiant floor heating to your bathroom in a few years? Not a problem, the combi-boiler can run that as well. Need heat in a new spot but don’t have any room or way to run conventional ductwork, try a stylish antique rad. The Navien NCB 180 is a completely expandable system that will provide years of use for any home owner with future plans for renovations.
The combi-boiler from Navien is highly efficient at around 91-92 percent. So every dollar you spend on fuel 91 cents are actually being used for heat. This is a drastic departure from even just 10 or 20 years ago when furnace systems would send 30 to 40 cents out the exhaust pipe, completely wasted.
