This is a controversial question as some tankless water heaters result in a much better fit than others and thus they may be considered better by some users in different situations.

    Rinnai RL75i

We have facilitated the installation of thousands of tankless systems and ensured that additional warranty and extended service is provided on all of the installed systems.  In terms or reliability the Rinnai tankless heater is ahead of all the competition.  Service records are able to prove this statement; emergency maintenance personnel are rarely called to fix the unit and thus we think it is one of the best tankless systems.

The Rinnai RL75i is one of our biggest sellers.

    • 12 year heat exchanger, 5 year parts warranty
    • Max/Min input 10,300-180,000 BTU
    • EZ connect (scalable if your needs grow)
    • 3.8-7.5 GPM (Winter/Summer)
    • Energy factor of 0.82

    • Size – 14w x 23h x 9d
    • Weight – 25.6 lbs 19.8 kg

    • Reliable

It should be noted that Rinnai has very particular venting requirements that make it a bit more difficult to install.  The specialized vent pipe is concentric meaning that the exhaust pipe is inside the intake pipe.  Due to the concentric vent pipe the hole drilled in the wall is 6″ in diameter but only a single hole verses 2, 3″ holes for other tankless systems.

Rinnai has strict rules for its installation and actually has its own school to certify installers.  To sell and service these systems we had to have our installers all pass the Rinnai course.  This does insure a proper installation and fewer breakdowns.

    Navien Tankless Water Heaters

The Navien brand of tankless systems are big sellers as well. All of the units that Navien makes are condensing tankless systems  This condensing technology brings the efficiency of the unit up into the high 95% efficiency range and makes it the most efficient type of tankless.  Do note – There have been a number of issues with a past generation model of Navien, we service that generation tankless more than any other brand or manufacturer. (UPDATE 2012 – Navien discontinued the problem system and is now two generations past the problems – We have been installing the new Navien systems with little to no problems).

The water quality in Toronto and surrounding areas like Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon (Peel region) is considered moderately hard (check out our water hardness chart for surrounding areas).  Vaughan, Markham, Richmond Hill, or York Region has hard water due to the Oak ridges moraine and deposits within it. City of Toronto, Pickering, Ajax, and all cities along the shore of Lake Ontario that rely on the lake for water have slightly hard water.  This is important to know as a tankless water heater (as well as a conventional water heater) can collect deposits causing the systems efficiency to be reduced.  It is important to clean your Tankless water heater on a yearly basis. Give us a call to schedule a tankless flushing or get the rates in and around the GTA and Southern Ontario.

There are a number of great tankless water heater brands available in the market place currently.  The new version of the Navien condensing tankless seems to have far fewer issues. Also most of the manufactures have developed and now sell condensing units.

    Best Condensing Tankless

The Rheem 95DV is a great condensing tankless made by Rheem
The Rinnai RU98i This is one of the condensing unit made by Rinnai and works amazing as well

All of the units mentioned above have very similar stats and performance, thus its boils down to the situation.  Get a few quotes and go with an installer that’s not quoting you the bottom of the barrel price, you will get what you pay for.  The brand of tankless that you choose will be determined in part by you and the layout of your home with regards to venting and code requirements.
