The ecoENERGY Retrofit for residential homes is creating jobs and helping Ontario residents save money. These changes help to reduce energy bills now and in the future. BUT you need to act quickly, funding for the grant program is limited and everyones evaluations and retrofits need to be completed before March 31, 2012 or you will missout.

This ecoENERGY retrofit program has a specific section for tankless water heaters as they’re very high efficiency systems compared to what has conventionally been installed in homes. In Ontario you can expect a $375 rebate from the Government if you decided to switch over to a high efficiency tankless.

Several tankless brands are able to deliver the required efficiency and all bring in the full rebate value. If your interested you can read more about the different tankless brands and their specifications below.

Eligibility for the ecoENERGY retrofit program in Ontario

New ecoENERGY Participants – If you or the previous owner of your home didn’t have and energy audit completed between April 1 2007 and June 5 2011 than you are considered a new applicant. All you need to do is sign up and have the initial audit of your home completed – FIND OUT MORE

Past ecoENERGY Participants – If you or the previous owner of your home participated in the program between April 1 2007 and June 5 2011 and the maximum amount of $5000 wasn’t submitted then you can submit another application for upgrades completed on or after June 6 2011.

Here are a list of Common Errors on the Rinnai Tankless Water heater.

02	No burner operation during freeze protection mode	Service Call
03	Power interruption during Bath Fill (Water will not flow when power returns).	Turn off all hot water taps. Press ON/OFF twice.
10	Air Supply or Exhaust Blockage	Ensure Rinnai approved venting materials are being used. Check that nothing is blocking the flue inlet or exhaust of Rinnai. Check all vent components for proper connections. Ensure vent length is within limits. Ensure condensation collar was installed correctly. Verify dip switches are set properly. Check fan for blockage.
11	No Ignition	Check that the gas is turned on at the water heater, gas meter, or cylinder. Ensure gas type and pressure is correct. Ensure gas line, meter, and/or regulator is sized properly. Bleed all air from gas lines on Rinnai. Verify dip switches are set properly. Ensure Rinnai is properly grounded. Disconnect EZConnect™ or MSA controls to isolate the problem. Ensure igniter is operational on Rinnai. Check igniter wiring harness for damage. Check gas solenoid valves for open or short circuits. Remove burner cover and ensure all burners are properly seated. Remove burner plate and inspect burner surface for condensation or debris.
12	Flame Failure	Check that the gas is turned on at the water heater and gas meter. Check for obstructions in the flue outlet. Ensure gas line, meter, and/or regulator is sized properly. Ensure gas type and pressure is correct. Bleed all air from gas lines on Rinnai. Ensure proper Rinnai venting material was installed. Ensure condensation collar was installed properly. Ensure vent length is within limits. Verify dip switches are set properly. Ensure appliance is properly grounded. Disconnect keypad on Rinnai. Disconnect EZConnect™ or MSA controls to isolate the problem. Check power supply for loose connections. Check power supply for proper voltage and voltage drops. Ensure flame rod wire is connected on Rinnai. Check flame rod for carbon build-up. Disconnect and reconnect all wiring harnesses on unit and PC board. Check for DC shorts at components on Rinnai. Check gas solenoid valves for open or short circuits. Remove burner plate and inspect burner surface for condensation or debris.
16	Over Temperature Warning	Check for restrictions in air flow around unit and vent terminal. Check for low water flow in a circulating system causing short-cycling. Check for foreign materials in combustion chamber and/or exhaust piping. Check for clogged heat exchanger on Rinnai.
32	Outgoing Water Temperature Sensor Fault	Check sensor wiring for damage. Measure resistance of sensor. Clean sensor of scale build-up. Replace sensor on Rinnai.
33	Heat Exchanger Outgoing Temperature Sensor Fault	Check sensor wiring for damage. Measure resistance of sensor. Clean sensor of scale build-up. Replace sensor on Rinnai.
34	Combustion Air Temperature Sensor Fault	Check for restrictions in air flow around unit and vent terminal. Check sensor wiring for damage. Measure resistance of sensor. Clean sensor of scale build-up. Ensure fan blade is tight on motor shaft and is in good condition. Replace sensor on Rinnai.
52	Modulating Solenoid Valve Signal Abnormal	Check modulating gas solenoid valve wiring harness for loose or damaged terminals. Measure resistance of valve coil on Rinnai.
61	Combustion Fan Failure	Ensure fan will turn freely on Rinnai. Check wiring harness to motor for damaged and/or loose connections. Measure resistance of motor winding.
65	Water Flow Control Fault	The water flow control valve has failed to close during the bath fill function. Immediately turn off the water and discontinue the bath fill function. Contact a state qualified or licensed contractor to service the appliance.
71	SV0, SV1, SV2, and SV3 Solenoid Valve Circuit Fault	Check wiring harness to all solenoids for damage and/or loose connections. Measure resistance of each solenoid valve coil.
72	Flame Sensing Device Fault	Ensure flame rod is touching flame when unit fires. Check all wiring to flame rod for damage. Remove flame rod and check for carbon build-up; clean with sand paper. Check inside burner chamber for any foreign material blocking flame at flame rod. Measure micro amp output of sensor circuit with flame present. Replace flame rod on Rinnai.
LC	Scale Build-up in Heat Exchanger (when checking maintenance code history, “00” is substituted for “LC”)	Flush heat exchanger. Refer to instructions in manual. Replace heat exchanger. NOTE: The LC code is the only error code that will allow the unit to keep running. The display will alternate between the LC code and the temperature setting. The controller will continue to beep. The LC code will reset if power is turned off and then on.
No code	Nothing happens when water flow is activated.	Clean inlet water supply filter on Rinnai. On new installations ensure hot and cold water lines are not reversed. Check for bleed over. Isolate unit from building by turning off hot water line to building. Isolate the circulating system if present. Open your pressure relief valve; if water is flowing, there is bleed over in your plumbing. Ensure you have at least the minimum flow rate required to fire unit. Ensure turbine spins freely on Rinnai. Measure the resistance of the water flow control sensor. Check for DC shorts at components.

Rinnai Tankless Error LC Code

Your Rinnai will build up a scale on the inside of the heat exchanger significantly reducing efficiency. If it becomes too much the Rinnai tankless will produce an error code LC (or 00 when previewing error history).

How to Fix Error LC on your Rinnai

As a temporary fix if you simply unplug the unit and wait 60 seconds then plug it back in the tankless should work for a little while. The Rinnai may work for up to a week before the error shows up again but it’s important you address the issue as soon as possible.

To properly fix the problem the tankless needs to be flushed to remove the scale buildup. Toronto and surrounding areas serviced by municipal water have reasonable water hardness. Areas serviced by well water are prone to higher water hardness and greater scale buildup in the tankless.

This chart pits the two main tankless systems that each manufacturer produces, the only row it is missing is reliability. Unfortunately we dont have any scientific data on that but would venture to say that the Rinnai makes the more dependable tankless. This is solely based on comments that we receive here on the site regarding the two tankless manufacturers.

Rinnai Tankless water heaters are available for Government rebates and incentives. These have been put in place by the Provincial Government to spur on the adoption of tankless water heaters in homes. A tankless reduces you natural gas consumption considerable compared to a conventional tank.

The current program is coming to an end (March 2011) but will be replaced with a new (smaller incentive) program. The Government underestimated its popularity and is stuck paying the higher grant values. So if you live in Toronto, Oakville , Hamilton, Mississauga, Etobicoke, Richmond Hill, Maple, Vaughan, etc etc your in luck!

Tankless Warranty Facts

Tankless systems all seem to have different warranties and information regarding their heat exchangers, parts, and labour on installation. Here is a small break down of what you as a home owner can expect.

Bosch – 12 year warranty on tankless heat exchanger and 2 years on Parts.

Navian – 15 year warranty on tankless heat exchanger and 5 years on Parts

Noritz - 10 year warranty on tankless heat exchanger and 5 years on Prats.

Rinnai – 12 year warranty on tankless heat exchanger and 5 on Parts, but also comes with 1 year on labour.

Takagi - 10 year warranty on tankless heat exchanger, 5 years on Parts, and 1 year on labour.

It pays to do your research as you can see there is a bit of a difference between the different brands and the warranties that they offer. These tankless systems are designed to last for a number of years, many years longer than your conventional tank water heater.

Also know that the company you hire to do the installation more often than not (if they are reputable) will add additional warranty on to your unit. Make sure to get a few quotes and make the warranty a priority when negotiating the price.
