The lifespan of a Navien is 20 plus years and the manufacture provides a warranty for 15 years on them.  By the time your conventional tank type water heater hits 15 years it will be so full of calcium and build up it you will be lucky if it is achieving more than 20% efficiency.  Meanwhile if you had had one of our Toronto reps come by and install a tankless your system would still be operating in the high 90% efficiency range.

Takagi Condensing Tankless

Here is the Takagi T-H2 Condensing Tankless hot water heater, there’s a lot to cover so lets get started.

The T-H2 model is available as a direct vent or an Outdoor model only. Takagi’s T-H2 “2nd Generation High Efficiency Tankless” unit, is a very energy efficient tankless unit (up to 95% in thermal efficiency) in the Tankless industry.  The T-H2 was apparently designed for residential and light commercial use and offers Takagi’s Easy-Link to join multiple units.

The T-H2 can provide upwards of three showers’ worth of water simultaneously in colder climates.

The T-H2 can be vented with PVC, providing 0 clearance for DV installations. PVC venting can be used in all applications and apparently Takagi says that 3″ exhaust venting is now available (previously it required a 3″ intake and a 4″ exhaust).

The primary heat exchanger is made of “Heat Resistant Alloy” HRS35 Copper, Takagi has also added a “High Corrosion Resistant Stainless Steel” #316L secondary heat exchanger to recover waste heat from the vent stack before it leaves the unit to preheat the incoming ground water. This second heat exchanger and the resulting condensation that forms from the high efficiency operation, classify it as a “Condensing” Water Heater.

As we all know Canada can has winter, and this affects our ground water temperature.  The higher the tankless has to heat ground water up the lower the output flow of hot water is.  Ontario’s ground water fluctuates with the coldest temperatures occurring in February and the warmest is September.  Toronto, Hamilton, Brampton, Scarborough, Mississauga for example are places that rarely see ground water temperatures dip below 40 degrees Fahrenheit.  Thus its safe to assume a minimum of 4.6GPM in the worst of conditions.

Conclusion

Tankless Government Grants

Currently the Ontario and Canadian government are giving rebates to households in Ontario that upgrade their conventional water heaters to either a state or a tankless water heater (I realize that state tanks have not really been explained so I will make a point to do a synopsis on them this week). The provincial (Ontario) will give 250$ for any tankless water heater that is installed, the federal government will match that offer which totals the rebate to 500$. This is a good chunk off the purchase and installation of a tankless water heater. State tanks are eligible for 300$ from the federal government and another 300$ from the Ontario government totaling 600$.

Additionally if you live in the Enbridge territory they are offering 300$ off your gas bill for any new tankless water heater installation in your home. Enbridge’s territory consist of most of southern Ontario. Their service territory includes these cities referenced below and a number of others but it would be too long to list:

• Barrie
• Bolton
• Brampton
• Caledon
• Metro Toronto
• Mississauga
• Newmarket
• Richmond Hill
• Whitby

Ontario has a unique market where a significant portion of hot water tanks are rented. As the market for tankless hot water tanks begins to penetrate households there has become a strong demand for rental units for these systems as well. If you decide that renting is a better idea than outright purchasing you are still entitled to the rebates that are offered from both the government and from Enbridge.

There is a small catch though; to prove that you have upgraded you water heating system the Ontario government requires that a homeowner get an energy audit. This is a thorough evaluation of your home and its overall efficiency. Once the first audit is completed, you, the homeowner are sent the results of your audit (SAMPLE REPORT). Now that this is completed you have 18 months to make any renovations, or get your tankless hot water tank installed. After the renovations have been completed you need to get a second audit which will validate that all upgrades have been completed and grant cheques will be sent.
