Navien tankless has issued a recall on thousands of tankless systems that have pose a risk of leaking carbon monoxide and poisoning homeowners.

Navien is located in South Korea and has been manufacturing it’s tankless water heater for several years now. There are a suspected 13,000 units with the defect and recalled. An unstable connection can cause the vent collar to separate or disconnect allowing exhaust and carbon monoxide to leak into the home.

Tankless water heaters are a green appliance that is able to heat water instantly saving consumers money and energy. A tankless eliminates the need to have a standing storage hot water tank that needs to be heated continuously.

The affected Navien tankless systems that are being recalled were sold to distributors from February 2008 to March 2009. They have been described as:

Navien tankless hot water heaters are white with “T-Creator” and “NAVIEN” on the front. Recalled model numbers are CR-180(A), CR-210(A), CR-240(A), CC-180(A), CC-210(A) and CC-240(A) manufactured in 2008. A label on the side of the water heater lists the model number along with the manufacturing year in YYYY format.

These units are installed indoors in basements and closets (typically in Canada and the northern US). The units that are installed outside are not affected and not being recalled.

If you discover you have one of these models you can schedule a free repair but should not use the water heater in the mean time. Navien also suggests that a carbon monoxide detector be installed outside the sleeping areas of homes.

For more information you can contact Navien at (800) 244-8202 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. PT Monday through Friday.

This ecoENERGY retrofit program has a specific section for tankless water heaters as they’re very high efficiency systems compared to what has conventionally been installed in homes. In Ontario you can expect a $375 rebate from the Government if you decided to switch over to a high efficiency tankless.

Several tankless brands are able to deliver the required efficiency and all bring in the full rebate value. If your interested you can read more about the different tankless brands and their specifications below.

The lifespan of a Navien is 20 plus years and the manufacture provides a warranty for 15 years on them. By the time your conventional tank type water heater hits 15 years it will be so full of calcium and build up it you will be lucky if it is achieving more than 20% efficiency. Meanwhile if you had had one of our Toronto reps come by and install a tankless your system would still be operating in the high 90% efficiency range.

Servicing the Toronto and area region has shown one thing to us, houses are small and space is important to home owners. A Navien tankless can reduce your water heaters footprint by over 90% as it simply mounts on the wall. Take back some of your space with a tankless heater.

Not all Toronto and area homes can meet the venting and positioning requirements necessary and thus its important to understand the requirements that need to be met. If you live in Toronto or surrounding area we do offer free assesments where some one can come to your home and ensure that a tankless will work for youand your home. Again this is free for Toronto and surrounding areas. Otherwise if your handy you can check out the diagram to see for yourself if a tankless will fit.

Its funny that most of the major tankless companies dont have canadian version of their websites… Canada is a very natural gas dependant country and thus we have this service in the majority of our homes. You would think that a market of 30 million plus might foster a small investment in a geocentric Canadian content specific website.

Tankless manufactures know that the further north their product is installed the colder the ground water and the more energy is needed to heat the water up to acceptable temperatures. For the most part all of the major tankless companies have successfully overcome this issue. They certainly should work on advertising and showcasing thier advancements. Canadian tankless manufacture websites would go a long way.

This chart pits the two main tankless systems that each manufacturer produces, the only row it is missing is reliability. Unfortunately we dont have any scientific data on that but would venture to say that the Rinnai makes the more dependable tankless. This is solely based on comments that we receive here on the site regarding the two tankless manufacturers.

So you have decided to go for a Navien tankless water heater, how much can you expect to get back?

Navien Tankless Rebates

Navien CC-210A – $375

Navien CC-240A- $375

Navien CR-180- $375

Basically all Navien Tankless Water heaters are eligible for the $375 Grant as the they are all condensing units.

Navien makes the most efficient tankless available on the market but be cautious and make sure you are getting a good new generation unit as the old versions had and still have MANY issues (see issues here).

Don’t forget rental tankless systems are still eligible for rebates.

Price out a Rinnai Tankless, the rc98hpi is a condensing tankless with a energy factor of 94%. It is a very stable unit with little to no issues.

There are a number of different brands of tankless water heaters below you will find a short synopsis of each of each tankless system.

Rinnai Tankless

Easily one of the biggest suppliers of tankless units, they are known for stability and reliability. Of all the experience we have had with tankless water heaters Rinnai’s Tankless is by far the most reliable unit on the market today.

Navien Tankless

This one is often spelled incorrectly as “Navian”. It has been know as the the most efficient tankless with their units reaching 98% efficiency. They have had reliability issues in the past but they are on to the 4th generation now and most of the issues have been cleared up.

Noritz Tankless

Not the most popular brand of tankless but it is a nice unit none the less. Reliability is lacking a bit but it makes it up in its efficiency.

Bosch Tankless

Commonly sold in Home Depots, these tankless systems are good units but they are so frequently incorrectly sized and installed that they have developed a bad reputation due to this.

Takagi Tankless

If for some reason I couldn’t get a Rinnai tankless I would choose the Takagi tankless model for sure, high efficiency, reliability, and easy venting. What more could you ask for?

John Wood Tankless

This brand can be difficult to find in Toronto or Ontario for that matter, its mainly sold in the US and is made by GSW.
