Instant or Tankless Water Heaters?
Apr 29th
Things to Know.
|
Most of us have grown up with a standard tank type water heater. As such we are used to the way our hot water system works. Switching to a tankless water heater will have an affect on the way your hot water system works.
With a tank type heater, when you turn on a hot water faucet, the hot water, typically 140 degrees, immediately begins flowing through the pipe to get to your faucet. As the water travels through the cold pi pe, it cools off until the piping material warms up. That is why your hot water doesn’t instantly go from cold to hot; it has to warm up the pipes first.
Some homes have hot water circulating systems that circulate the hot water through the pipes to obtain instant hot water at every sink. Circulating systems can save a lot of water. They are wasteful of energy though, since the water heater will fire up more often to replace the heat being lost through the piping which acts like a big radiator even if the pipes are well insulated.
There are also pumping systems that pump the hot water to the fixture from the heater only when you want to use hot water and you don’t run any water down the drain. You still save the water and time, but you don’t waste water.
Tankless Systems
Tankless water heaters are being promoted as providing endless hot water and as being energy saving over traditional water heaters. While both of these facts are true, there are other things to consider.
If you are considering replacing your tank type water heater with a tankless unit, and you have a typical house, make sure you get one large enough to do the job. Since you are heating water as you use it, you must heat it much more quickly than a tank type heater so you need to add heat much more quickly.
For a gas type heater this means you will be using a lot more gas volume/ minute than with a tank type heater. Your exhaust flue may need to be larger and the gas line might need to be upgraded. For electric units you might have to have special wiring put in to handle the high amperage loads created by an electric tankless water heater.
Tankless water heaters are typically much smaller than conventional tanks and are hung on the wall, resulting in a significant space savings.
Tankless water heaters can save you a modest amount of energy, typically around $20.00 – $40.00 a month. They are also eligible for home energy Grants and Rebates provided by the Government to aid in a speedy transition from the old energy consuming conventional tank to this new efficient technology.

Service Area

Ontario is an extensive province with over 1 million square kilometers, in the continental US Texas is the largest state coming in at 6 hundred thousand square
kilometer range. Our 4th largest province is nearly twice the size of the largest continental US state.
Thus we have a difficult time providing tankless water heaters to all of Ontario never-mind the rest of Canada, but we try our best. Below is a map of our primary service area where we are able to complete home energy audits and provide service and installation. We are selling individual units with no installation and these can be shipped nearly anywhere but for the most part you may find a cheaper unit near your home. If you’re inquisitive though send us a quick email and we can provide a price and shipping quote.
Energy Audits
- Tan area – basically all of Ontario could be a week or more depends on where the next available auditor is.
- Green area – roughly 2 to 5 business days
- Pink area – usually within 1-3 days
Tankless Unit only
- We routinely have units shipped within the same day of purchase (it does depend on the unit requested and if its one we have in stock)
Tankless Unit with Quote and Installation
- Green Area - We can usually have a guy out to do a preliminary inspection and solidify a quote within 2-4 days and installation in another few days
- Red Area – Quote and installation is routinely completed in under a week
Service Calls
- We service most of southern Ontario and can do emergency calls, depending on where our service techs are we can sometimes be at a customers house in under 30 minutes.
See the contact page here (Contact Us) for more information on how we can be reached.

Just want to thank everyone for submitting your information to our HUB. We have been inundated lately with requests for tankless water heaters and thus we are trying to call you all back to setup appointments as soon as possible. It can take upwards of 24 hours to hear back from us, but occasionally it can take less than 5 minutes from when you send the form request in.
Over the last few years we have installed thousands of tankless heaters and have received hundreds of compliments on these systems. It’s easy to accept this
praise when the system offers endless hot water at a fraction of the cost of a conventional water heater.
If you’re thinking of getting into a tankless water heater for your home now is one of the best times to take the plunge. Initially the cost is higher but the benefits far outweigh the small price gap between conventional and tankless. Government grants are at an all time high but are ending soon so get your $700 plus rebate before the program ends.

The Cold water Sandwich
Mar 23rd
What is the cold water sandwich?
|
This sandwich happens when there is warm water for a few minutes then a burst of cold and then rapidly back to warm. This occurs in homes with tankless water heaters as the residual water in the pipes going to a faucet or shower can still be hot. The user in the household will then turn the tap on and feel warm water almost instantly. A tankless water heater takes a few seconds to heat up the heat exchanger and start
transferring that heat to the water. The result is that a small amount of cold water can make it through the heat exchanger without warming up. When this cold water reaches the end user it may not even be noticed or if the person is in the shower it may be quite evident. After a second or two the heat exchanger is working and hot water is being produced and sent though the hot water pipes bring the desired water temperature again. This does occur more frequently in electric tankless water heaters over gas powered tankless systems. Gas is at full temperature almost immediately where an electric element can take a minute to fully reach its operating temperature.
Now you know what a hot water sandwich is in reference to plumbing and tankless hot water heaters, ask your contractor or installer as there are ways to mitigate this sandwich.

Navien Tankless Water Tank

Firstly let’s get this straight; Navien is a brand of tankless hot water heater not Navian.I have seen this
spelled wrong many times, Navian (I googled it) is nothing, definitely not a tankless water heater.
Navien has 6 residential models (CR-180, CR-210, CR-240, CR-180A, CR-210A, CR-240A) and then 3 commercial units (CC-180, CC-210, CC-240). These tankless water heaters are all relatively similarly designed but as you go up in model number you increase the amount of hot water the tankless unit can provide. Here is a quick list of each units performance.
- CR-180 and 180A are able to provide roughly 3.8 gallons per minute with a 77 degree F rise.
- CR-210 and 210A are able to provide roughly 4.5 gallons per minute with a 77 degree F rise
- CR-240 and 240A are able to provide roughly 5 gallons per minute with a 77 degree F rise
We should definitely look at the efficiency of the Navien tankless water heater which is currently the only condensing unit on the market. This extra step gives Navien the efficiency title, currently rated at 98%, therefore 98 cents of every dollar spent on heating your water is actually turned into hot water. This is an amazing number as most tankless water heaters are 10% to 15% less efficient. Of course being the first on the block has its issues, the Navien tankless water heater is facing some problems from rubber hoses becoming blocked. This has been reported numerous time in several forums around the internet.
The good thing is that most of the other Tankless water heater manufactures are working on their own form of tankless condensing units. This should give the consumer a good choice in high efficiency water heating.

Navien UPDATE-2010
This write up was done in February of 2009 so its been over a year now and there are a number of alternate condensing tankless water heaters available now. Navien was the first on the block and realistically you cant beat the price of the unit, even today its still lower than all condensing tankless units. Sure there has been some issues regarding the system but thats to be expected from a new technology (we will be authoring a new post on all these problems and their fix, check back soon).

Navien UPDATE – Feb 2012
Navien has spent a lot of time reworking their tankless water heaters and removing all the bugs and issues that have plagued them in the past. I feel more than confident in 2012 to recommend their new tankless water heaters.
