Remember not to long ago I talked about how a tankless could be combined with a solar thermal water heater? Well BAM! here are some rebates the Government is offereing that reduce the cost for both the tankless and the solar heater. I wouldn’t expect these to last too long (in fact, around April 2012 is when I would expect to offer to be removed).
Eco Energy Audit Put on Hold

With the fall of the Conservative party the budget that they had proposed containing the Eco Energy Audit program has be put on hold. Now its just a matter of time, waiting to see if the new Government will refund the program.
We will be sure to post any news we receive regarding the subject.
UPDATE – The Harper government will be providing a new budget soon and with it we hope there is funding to restart the grants and rebates offered with the past ecoenergy program!

Pricing a tankless from a website is, dare we say it…. Impossible.
There are too many unknowns, number of occupants, gas line size, venting issues, water pressure, to name only a few. Many sites offer tankless units and rely on the home owner to do the research necessary to understand all aspects of installation and preform it themselves. This is a recipe for disaster, it very well could work excellent and the owner may save some money… But these situations are far and few between. There is years of training and experience that plumbers and gas fitters go through to become qualified.

Rebates Are Still Available!
Most people think that the Eco Energy rebate program has ended but it is still ongoing and it will likely be re-instated upon its scheduled closing. 
If your interested in getting a tankless water heater for your home then you can still be eligible for rebate and grants from the Canadian Government to offset the higher cost of the tankless. You will need to participate in the Government Eco Energy Audit Program to become eligible for the grants.
The Energy Audit tells you information about your home and is a lot of value to most home owners, you will also gain access to grant money for home insulation, toilets, furnaces, air conditioners, etc.
How much rebate for a Tankless?
This is a common question and it changes with the tankless water heater you buy. You can expect $315 for any tankless that has an efficiency rating below 92%. If you go with a condensing tankless which will bring your efficiency rating up in between 94% to 98% you will receive $375.
Tankless water heaters are notoriously difficult to install and thus a representative needs to come out and assess your home. They can answer any further questions you have and help decide where you would like the unit installed (remember it mounts on the wall).

Giant microwaves to heat water instantly? Is this real? And can it actually work?
A microwave (like in a microwave oven) is generated by a magnetron at a frequency of 2.45 gigahertz, this is the 
exact frequency that targets water molecules and gets them vibrating faster and faster, thus heating up.
The principal behind a microwave tankless water heater is basically the same as your microwave oven at home just on a larger scale. Cold water will simply pass through the unit where it will be bombarded by microwaves actively exciting the molecules to the required temperature. The warm or hot water will then pass through the pluming system to the source of demand.
Effectively this is making hot water produced by electricity actually a reality. There are electric tankless water heaters, sure, but they require massive amounts of power and don’t reliably produce enough water to supply a modern home. Wanderport, a manufacturer of these systems is claiming upwards of 6-7 gallons per minute which is directly on par with conventional tankless systems.
What’s potentially so great about these systems?
First off there is no venting needed, no holes in the walls, no venting proximity restrictions; these are huge barriers that gas or propane tankless systems face. On that same note, the conventional tankless systems sometimes require home owners to upgrade supply lines as units can consume upwards of 199,000 Btu’s.
Secondly a microwave unit has an efficiency of 99% and emits no pollution. The unit also doesn’t degrade over time as a conventional tankless does with calcium deposits and buildups in the various heat exchangers that they need.
So what’s the chances of you getting a microwave water heater in your home in the near future?
According to Wanderport, quite realistic. In fact they have a product on the verge of being released. Its already won an advanced technology award from the
Toronto Construction Association.

Here is the Takagi T-H2 Condensing Tankless hot water heater, there’s a lot to cover so lets get started.

The T-H2 model is available as a direct vent or an Outdoor model only. Takagi’s T-H2 “2nd Generation High Efficiency Tankless” unit, is a very energy efficient tankless unit (up to 95% in thermal efficiency) in the Tankless industry. The T-H2 was apparently designed for residential and light commercial use and offers Takagi’s Easy-Link to join multiple units.
The T-H2 can provide upwards of three showers’ worth of water simultaneously in colder climates.
The T-H2 can be vented with PVC, providing 0 clearance for DV installations. PVC venting can be used in all applications and apparently Takagi says that 3″ exhaust venting is now available (previously it required a 3″ intake and a 4″ exhaust).
The primary heat exchanger is made of “Heat Resistant Alloy” HRS35 Copper, Takagi has also added a “High Corrosion Resistant Stainless Steel” #316L secondary heat exchanger to recover waste heat from the vent stack before it leaves the unit to preheat the incoming ground water. This second heat exchanger and the resulting condensation that forms from the high efficiency operation, classify it as a “Condensing” Water Heater.

As we all know Canada can has winter, and this affects our ground water temperature. The higher the tankless has to heat ground water up the lower the output flow of hot water is. Ontario’s ground water fluctuates with the coldest temperatures occurring in February and the warmest is September. Toronto, Hamilton, Brampton, Scarborough, Mississauga for example are places that rarely see ground water temperatures dip below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Thus its safe to assume a minimum of 4.6GPM in the worst of conditions.

Conclusion
If you are looking for a condensing tankless that is relatively cheap and flexible for installation the Takagi condensing unit is definitely one that you should consider. This unit is $2575 our price and the Suggested Retail is $3920, which is considerably more.

Enbridge Gas Distribution is offering a new program that offers residential customers $300 off their gas bill with the installation of a new or rented tankless natural gas water heater. Enbridge has taken the trend 
toward environmental stewardship and embraced it by offering clients an additional incentive to become more efficient.
Customers of Enbridge can become eligible for the rebate with the purchase of a tankless water heater that is a qualified energy star system. The primary brands that qualify are, John Wood, Navien, Paloma, Rheem, Takagi, Rinnai, and WaiWela. The hitch is that the units need to be installed before August 31, 2009. The territory severed mainly consists of, Toronto, York, Durham, and the Greater Toronto Area.

Grant Money Increased By 25%

Part of the government’s economic action plan is to boost the eco energy retrofit program that is currently running. The government has increased all available grant money for energy efficient retrofits by 25%. Additionally the program has been expanded with a 300 million dollar increase in funding over the next two 
years.

Initially the program gave home owners 18 months to complete all retrofits, perform the E audit and submit files for rebates. This has now been extended and homeowners that are past their 18 month time frame can still perform retrofits and get access to additionally grant money by performing a F-audit.
This is really significant for The Tankless Hot Water Guide as the additionally grant money will further reduce the cost of tankless water heaters for consumers. A tankless with an efficiency of .82% or better will get you 630$ in rebate money. If you decide to go with a condensing tankless water heater the grant money is even better (.94% efficiency or better) this will net you a 750$ cheque from the government.
You cant find a better time to get go out and get a tankless water heater.
