The ecoEnergy program that gives homeowners access to thousands in grant money to upgrade and improve the efficiency of their homes is coming to an end.

This program is quite convoluted due to both the Provincial and Federal Governments flip flopping on both funding and support for the ecoEnergy retrofit. I guess when something is as successful as the ecoEnergy program it makes sense that our Government would work to dismantle it.

Moving from a old tank type hot water system to a tankless will net you 315-375 dollars in rebate money depending on the efficiency of your new tankless. You can also add grants up, so if you change out your old furnace or insulate you walls to R-50, then add 750-1250 dollars to that 375 dollars you received for the tankless. It’s definitely a great opportunity for Canadians to take advantage of.

Having an energy audit on your home shows you the home owner intimate details regarding the walls, roof, equipment, insulation, and efficiency of the place you live and call home. It can provide very useful ways to not only save money but get you access to grants that help offset the cost of the upgrades. The ecoEnergy audit retrofit will once again be cancelled on March 31st 2012.

You can find out more on where do get an audit from http://homeecoenergyaudit.ca

If you are interested in the grants and the values that are available you can check them out here on this GRANT CHART

Navien tankless has issued a recall on thousands of tankless systems that have pose a risk of leaking carbon monoxide and poisoning homeowners.

Navien is located in South Korea and has been manufacturing it’s tankless water heater for several years now. There are a suspected 13,000 units with the defect and recalled. An unstable connection can cause the vent collar to separate or disconnect allowing exhaust and carbon monoxide to leak into the home.

Tankless water heaters are a green appliance that is able to heat water instantly saving consumers money and energy. A tankless eliminates the need to have a standing storage hot water tank that needs to be heated continuously.

The affected Navien tankless systems that are being recalled were sold to distributors from February 2008 to March 2009. They have been described as:

Navien tankless hot water heaters are white with “T-Creator” and “NAVIEN” on the front. Recalled model numbers are CR-180(A), CR-210(A), CR-240(A), CC-180(A), CC-210(A) and CC-240(A) manufactured in 2008. A label on the side of the water heater lists the model number along with the manufacturing year in YYYY format.

These units are installed indoors in basements and closets (typically in Canada and the northern US). The units that are installed outside are not affected and not being recalled.

If you discover you have one of these models you can schedule a free repair but should not use the water heater in the mean time. Navien also suggests that a carbon monoxide detector be installed outside the sleeping areas of homes.

For more information you can contact Navien at (800) 244-8202 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. PT Monday through Friday.

I have read a few articles lately regarding a number of beliefs, ideas, and thoughts on the benefits and opinions of tankless water heaters. I would like to take a few minutes here to verify and nullify some of them.

A tankless water heater will not save you money.

This depends so much on the situation it’s impossible to make any claim that a tankless will not save you money. Here are a few variables that factor in.

The price of natural gas varies by Province, City, Country, and even supplier and on top of that there is delivery charges, taxes, and additional fees. A tankless can significantly influence these costs instigating either an increase or a decrease (more often than not its a decrease).

The price of the tankless… this varies again with the size of unit, the brand etc etc. Also be careful of door to door conventional tank type water heater sales people, more often than not those contracts are much higher than the actual cost of a tankless.

Tankless warranties are pretty similar to a conventional tank type water heater, but…. a tankless is designed to be serviced and have a lifespan of over 20 years. Their heat exchangers are designed to be cleaned of all calcification, whereas you tank type heater is simply designed to be replaced

So take the what you hear about the advantages and disadvantages of a tankless with a grain of salt. If someone has decided it’s not for them and feels it important to rhyme off a few common misconceptions take the time to investigate and see if its right for your home.

Your Rinnai will build up a scale on the inside of the heat exchanger significantly reducing efficiency. If it becomes too much the Rinnai tankless will produce an error code LC (or 00 when previewing error history).

How to Fix Error LC on your Rinnai

As a temporary fix if you simply unplug the unit and wait 60 seconds then plug it back in the tankless should work for a little while. The Rinnai may work for up to a week before the error shows up again but it’s important you address the issue as soon as possible.

To properly fix the problem the tankless needs to be flushed to remove the scale buildup. Toronto and surrounding areas serviced by municipal water have reasonable water hardness. Areas serviced by well water are prone to higher water hardness and greater scale buildup in the tankless.

From the smallest homes and business to the very largest, everyone invests a substantial amount of money into heating water. The problem is lime scale buildup on the surface of water heaters, which significantly reduces heat transfer. This lime scale reduces heat transfer, decreases fuel efficiency, and will ultimately lead to equipment failure.

Water naturally contains dissolved minerals such as calcium carbonate, lime, silica, iron, and phosphate to name a few. These trace elements are essential to human health, not so much for your water heater though. With heat the minerals are able to precipitate out and build up on the surfaces.

On day one of a tank type water heater you looking at your greatest efficiency, sometimes as high as 80%. This is reduced quickly as the lime and other particles cling together and bake themselves into a hard crust. This scale builds up on the walls and blocks the heat transfer proportionally as much. With the additional heat not being transferred into the water the steel becomes brittle and can crack quite easily.

Solutions For Lime Scaling

For a tankless water heater it is essential that you have the system flushed once a year with a de scaling solution (vinegar). This maintains the tankless heat exchanger and ensure a consistent efficiency rate. As for your conventional tank water heater, flushing is more difficult but can be done. For the most part they are designed as disposable units that are simply just replaced if broken.

Bosch – 12 year warranty on tankless heat exchanger and 2 years on Parts.

Navian – 15 year warranty on tankless heat exchanger and 5 years on Parts

Rinnai – 12 year warranty on tankless heat exchanger and 5 on Parts, but also comes with 1 year on labour.

It pays to do your research as you can see there is a bit of a difference between the different brands and the warranties that they offer. These tankless systems are designed to last for a number of years, many years longer than your conventional tank water heater.

Also know that the company you hire to do the installation more often than not (if they are reputable) will add additional warranty on to your unit. Make sure to get a few quotes and make the warranty a priority when negotiating the price.

Rinnai has had the honours of receiving accolades from three media outlets recently. The first being Builders Magazine 2010 brand leader in quality. The second is Greenbuilder’s Magazine Hot 50 products of 2010. The last is a nod from Bestcover.com best Whole-House tankless water heater.

Rinnai had this to say,

“We’re thrilled that each of these publications independently found Rinnai worthy of such distinct honors,” said Rinnai America General Manager Phil Weeks. “Builder, GreenBuilder and Bestcovery.com each target a specific segment of our customer base, and these awards communicate to all three audiences that Rinnai is a leader in the tankless industry. Tankless is the future of water heating in North America, so as builders and consumers embrace this new technology, having the endorsement of these influential publications will help instill confidence in our products and the Rinnai brand.”

Rinnai is a subsidiary of Rinnai Corporation in Nagoya, Japan, and was established in 1974. The American headquarters is in Peachtree City, Ga. Rinnai Corporation manufactures gas appliances including tankless water heaters, a wide range of kitchen appliances and heating and air conditioning units. As the technology leader in its industry, Rinnai is the largest gas appliance manufacturer in Japan and is the number one selling brand of tankless gas water heaters in North America. In fact I would bet that around 40% of toronto / GTA homes cant even get a tankless system. Does your home meet the requirements and thus 750$ in government rebates? Toronto and surrounding area homes that meet tankless installation requirements receive 750 dollars in government rebates.
